Research Paper GuidelinesBegin looking for a topic early in the semester and be prepared to submit a topic to the instructor for approval. This should be completed by the end of the 5th week of class at the latest. It is expected that you will research the topic fully and use numerous sources. For most papers, cite at least 10 different sources. If you are writing about a subject that relies on technological developments, the date of publication of your sources should be considered and current sources used. Follow the APA (American Psychological Association) style guides to determine the proper page format, numbering, headings, and citation style. For example, the printed paper should be designed for 8.5 x 11 paper, double spaced, 12-pt. type, with 1-inch margins. For detailed guidelines consult the APA manual of style located in the library (ask at the reserve desk). For citing on-line or electronic sources, check out the following resources:
Avoid plagiarism by citing appropriately other's words and thoughts. If you are unsure about what constitutes plagiarism, or how to cite properly, you may want to check out this web site at Purdue University or visit this Hamilton College site. Audio visual material used in the preparation of your paper; e.g., television programs, films on videotape, etc., should be cited as well and included in your list of references or works cited. Proof-read the paper for spelling errors, typos, and grammatical errors. It is highly recommended that you utilize the services offered by the Writing Center. Papers will be due on the last scheduled class meeting (the week before final exams) unless otherwise announced. Late papers will be penalized 10% per day (24 hours). |
