Ampex Production Switcher

The Ampex Vista switcher is an 18-input video switcher designed for both live production and post-production. Like any video switcher, the Vista can perform video transitions such as wipes, mixes, keys, etc. The Vista alone is not capable of digital video effects. However, in response to that need the station has installed an Abekas A-51 digital effects device which is available as a source on the Vista switcher. The A-51 will not be available to MCCNM 142 students.

The Ampex Vista switcher is a very complex device with many levels of operational functions. To keep things as simple as possible, MCCNM 142 students will focus primarily on the Downstream Bus Rows consisting of the preview and program buses (bottom two) with only occasional use of the Key Bus Row and the M/E Bus Rows (top two). For most projects the set-up functions of the switcher will be preset by the instructor. During rehearsal, Technical Directors (TDs) are encouraged to ask questions of the instructor in order to fully understand the steps necessary for a successfully switched program. However, instead of simply memorizing a set of keystrokes, we encourage you to attempt to fully understand the process that is at work.

The 18-input switcher has sixteen video bus inputs and two auxiliary inputs. See the complete list of switcher inputs below. MCCNM 142 students will utilize some or all of the following inputs:

In addition, the student will utilize the Downstream Transition Group consisting of the following buttons:

The student will also use the Downstream Fader and the Downstream Auto-transition Group consisting of the following buttons:
