Data Havens

by Jefferey Sutherland

Introduction

Privacy, security, anonimity. These are three critical issues on the Internet, and users all over the world are doing what they can to protect them. Some are going to extremes, especially those who have sensitive data they transmit online or run controversial web sites.

These "extreme" users are starting to place their information on secure servers called "data havens." These data havens guarantee privacy, security and anonimity, and pledge to protect these users from prying eyes and government regulation.

What is a data haven?
Why are people developing data havens?
Who are the people putting their information in data havens?
How much does it cost to be hosted in a data haven?
What are the legal matters involved in using a data haven?
How do data havens affect interactive media?
