Mine and Mill Research Paper Much of your work this semester will be built around a research paper on the mining or steel industry. The main source for this information should be the Colorado Fuel and Iron Archives. The purpose of this assignment is to give you a chance to experience the research process firsthand at a facility where you can break new ground on a subject. The first thing you will need to do is pick a topic. To do so you should look for material at the archive which you will find interesting. Once you've been there you can ask the Bessemer Historical Society's Jay Trask about this process or me. There is a library at the CF&I Archives that can offer you considerable secondary material on CF&I-related subjects. You might also want to visit the Western History Collection at the Pueblo Public Library, which also has a nearly complete run of the Pueblo Chieftain on microfilm. During the week of February 19th and March 20th, I will be scheduling individual conferences with students to check upon your progress concerning these papers. If you fail to meet benchmarks for progress that we set at these meetings, I reserve the right to fail you on this assignment. This is not a paper that can be done at the last minute. Planning ahead is absolutely essential. The final paper should be between 18 and 20 pages, double-spaced with normal margins. Footnotes and a bibliography are essential and do not count towards the total page number. The final paper is due during your final exam period, Thursday May 3rd, 2007 along with an oral summary of your work at a meeting of the Bessemer Historical Society, held in the Community Room of the Steelworks Museum of History and Culture. If you have any questions about these instructions or the content of this paper, come see me in my office hours or make an appointment.
