Labor History Spring 2008 Dublin Questions 1. In the preface to the Second Edition of Women at Work, Dublin writes, "The story of the first generation of women factory workers in the United States is clearly an account of the influences of gender and ethnicity on American capitalist industrialization." So how did gender and ethnicity influence American industrialization in the early 19th Century? 2. Why did rural New England girls go to work in textile mills? If it was primarily about the money, what did they do with that money? 3. What were "piece wages?" Are these better or worse than hourly wages? Explain.
