Math 126 — Calculus and Analytic Geometry I, Section 1
Homework Assignments & Course Schedule
Here is a link to the current week, below.
Here is a link back to the course
syllabus/policy page.
In the following all sections and page numbers refer to the required
course textbook, Calculus (6th ed.), by James Stewart.
This schedule is subject to change, but should be accurate at any
moment for at least a week into the future.
For each day, please read the section(s) named in the plan, before
that day, while the homework is due that day.
Things to remember about homework:
- It is due each day in class or, at the latest, by noon in my
office -- or under my office door if I'm not there when you come by.
- Hand in the Writing Emphasis problem(s) (indicated below as
"17WE", for example) and the
Peer Consultation problems (all the rest) separately.
- Every day a Big Idea sentence, or up to a paragraph, is also
due. This should also be on its own page.
- Every written solution you hand in should have two columns,
the left one with calculations, etc., the right one labelled "WHY"
and having explanations (often consisting of only one-word or just an
abbreviation) for every line (or group of lines indicated with
a curly brace "}")on the left. Pleaes also make sure that every
equals sign ("=") in your work really means that the quantities on
both sides of that symbol are the same. Finally, in case the problem
is to solve for some numerical or algebraic quantity, put this quantity
at the end of your calculation column in a box.
Week of August 24:
- The plan for this week:
- M: Mostly bureaucracy and introductions. Read "To the Student",
p. xxvi, "A Preview of Calculus", pp. 2-9, and Chapter 1.
- T: Read §2.1; HW0: Send me e-mail (at
jonathan.poritz@gmail.com)
telling me:
- Your name.
- Your e-mail address. (Please give me one that you actually check
fairly frequently, since I may use it to contact you during the
term.)
- Your year/program/major at CSUP.
- What you intend to do after CSUP, in so far as you have an idea.
- Past math classes you've had.
- Other math/science classes intend to take in future semesters.
- Other classes you're taking at the moment.
- The reason you are taking this course.
- Your favorite mathematical subject.
- Your favorite mathematical result/theorem/technique/example/problem.
- Anything else you think I should know (disabilities, employment
or other things that take a lot of time, etc.).
- [Optional:] The best book you have read recently.
I will only enter your name into my gradebook and give you your "late
HW passes" when I get this e-mail, so you really need to do this
assignment ASAP. Please take a moment to be complete (indeed, be as
expansive as you can) — the more information I have about you,
the better I can adapt the course to your needs and interests.

in up to three corrected Test II problems, if you wish, for possible
extra credit. Please also turn in, as today's Big Idea a
description of what you intend to do in this course for the remaining
five weeks of this term. If you are perfectly content with how Test
II turned out, say that (and tell me a bit of your study habits and
practices); if you wanted to do better, please make a specific
plan about what you will change to do this -- some ideas you might
consider are
- do extra problems every day and ask that they be graded;
- for every HW set or quiz on which you do not receive a perfect
score, talk to someone (at the MLC, a tutor, your professor) and
then re-do the problem(s) -- in your own words and handwriting --
correctly, and hand that in;
- ask for and then do, under time pressure and in a test-like
situation, a practice test before the next test(s), to help you
develop the confidence that you can do well despite test anxiety;
- write much longer, more complete, and more detailed Big Ideas
for the rest of the term, gradually building up a complete outline
of the course (perhaps even going back to do this for sections we
have already completed; perhaps including typical examples from
class, the book, or the HW exercises), and consulting with
someone (me, the MLC, ...) if there are any unclear points as
do your write-ups.
- etc. ideas of your own...
