Beginning Swimming

Course Description


This is an adult course in beginning swimming. Participants will learn basic water safety skills and a variety of strokes, as well as increasing their basic fitness for swimming. Students will work in groups based on their entry skill level.


Course Objectives


1. Develop basic water safety skills such as the ability enter the water safely, observe pool rules, support oneself in the water comfortably for an extended period, understand basic rescue techniques and swim continuously.

2. Develop and refine the basic swimming strokes including the crawl stroke, the elementary back stroke, the side stroke, the back stroke, and the breast stroke.

3. Improve swimming related physical fitness and demonstrate the ability to complete 500 yards continuously.

Attendance and Participation


1) Students who miss five or more classes may be subject to instructor withdrawal.

2) Students who miss quizzes or examinations without an excused absence or prior arrangement with the instructor may not makeup those quizzes or examinations.

3) Student are expected to wear a clean and appropriate swimming suit to class every day.

4) Please arrive at class, change and be on the pool deck by 5 minutes after the scheduled class time to begin. Students will be excused from class 10 minutes prior to the scheduled class completion time to accommodate changing time.
