Exercise Assessment, Prescription and Leadership

Course Description


The course covers methods used to assess exercise clients, prescribe effective exercise programs, and develop/lead group exercise classes in order to achieve optimal health in apparently healthy people.


Special Considerations


During scheduled activity sessions, students should dress in a way which will allows for full participation. In both fitness assessment activities and a variety of exercise programs.


Course Objectives


1. Demonstrate the effective use of pre-exercise screening procedures to classify risk and safely assess fitness and prescribe exercise.
2. Demonstrate the capability to assess cardiovascular fitness using a variety of modes including treadmill, step test and cycle ergometry testing.
3. Demonstrate the ability to assess muscular strength and endurance.
4. Demonstrate the capability to assess body composition using skinfold analysis.
5. Demonstrate the capability to assess flexibility using goniometer measurements and conventional test procedures , i.e. sit and reach tests, etc.
6. Demonstrate the ability to assess neuromuscular tension and stress.
7. Demonstrate the ability to develop effective exercise prescriptions for cardiovascular training, muscular fitness.

8. Demonstrate the ability to manage risk and create an emergency response plan in exercise testing and training situations.
9. Describe the importance of exercise programs.
10. Define the roles and responsibilities of an Exercise Leader.
11. Discuss legal, business and safety considerations relevant to exercise programs.
12. Describe essential concepts underlying exercise program development including: overload, progression, specificity and individuality.
13. Describe important underlying physiological and anatomical considerations for exercise programs.
14. Describe and demonstrate the basic teaching and motivational methodology used in exercise programs.
15. Describe the basic elements of a conditioning program including warm-up, specific conditioning and cool-down.

Grades are determined based on the following scale: A = 89.5-100%, B = 79.6-89.4%, C = 69.5-79.5%, D=<69.5%.


Attendance and Participation


1) Students who miss five or more classes may be subject to instructor withdrawal.

2) Students who miss quizzes or examinations without an excused absence or prior arrangement with the instructor may not makeup those quizzes or examinations.
